Toyota consistently tops reliability surveys in Ireland, and for good reason. Whether you want a cheap runabout, a family hybrid, or a practical SUV, there is a used Toyota that fits the brief and will not leave you stranded.
We sell a lot of Toyotas from our Dublin showroom. Here are the models we recommend most often, what to pay, and what to watch for when buying used.
Why Toyota dominates the Irish used market
Before the model-by-model breakdown, it is worth understanding why Toyota holds its value and reputation so well in Ireland:
- Reliability: Toyota and Lexus top every long-term dependability survey; major failures are rare on well-serviced examples
- Hybrid expertise: Toyota has sold hybrids in Ireland since 2000; the systems are proven over hundreds of thousands of kilometres
- Low running costs: most Toyotas sit in the €120–€280/year motor tax band
- Strong resale: a Toyota depreciates slower than most rivals, protecting your investment
- NCT compliance: simple engines and exhaust systems pass emissions tests more consistently than complex German rivals
Toyota Yaris (2011–2020): best budget buy
Price range: €6,000–€12,000 | Motor tax: €180–€280/year
The Yaris is the default answer for a cheap, reliable Irish runabout. The 1.0 and 1.33 petrol engines are simple and durable; the Hybrid (from 2012) adds excellent fuel economy and €120/year motor tax.
Best for: First-time buyers, city drivers, second cars, anyone under €10,000.
Watch for: Hybrid battery health on older Hybrid models (pre-2015); clutch wear on manual petrol versions with high mileage.
Toyota Corolla (2014–2022): best all-rounder
Price range: €10,000–€22,000 | Motor tax: €120–€280/year
The Corolla is Ireland's most recommended used car for a reason. The petrol 1.33 and 1.4 D-4D diesel are bulletproof; the Hybrid (from 2019) is the sweet spot for Dublin commuting, 4.5 L/100 km real-world fuel economy and €120/year motor tax.
Best for: Families, commuters, anyone wanting one car to do everything reliably.
Watch for: CVT transmission on Hybrid, smooth and reliable but expensive if neglected (regular fluid changes matter). Diesel DPF issues on short-trip driving.

Toyota Prius (2010–2022): best for maximum fuel economy
Price range: €8,000–€18,000 | Motor tax: €120/year
The Prius is the original hybrid icon. Taxi fleets across Dublin have validated the reliability of the Hybrid Synergy Drive system to 400,000 km and beyond. Real-world fuel economy of 4.0–5.0 L/100 km is achievable in mixed driving.
Best for: High-mileage commuters, Uber/taxi drivers, anyone prioritising fuel cost above all else.
Watch for: Hybrid battery on pre-2012 models (rare failures but costly); boot space is smaller than a Corolla.
Japanese import Prius models (2015–2018) often offer better value than Irish-market equivalents, see our import guide.
Toyota C-HR (2017–2023): best compact SUV
Price range: €14,000–€26,000 | Motor tax: €120–€180/year
The C-HR brought Toyota's hybrid technology into the compact crossover segment. Distinctive styling, good equipment levels, and Hybrid-only powertrain from 2019 onwards. Handles well for its class and the Hybrid system is the same proven unit as the Corolla.
Best for: Style-conscious buyers wanting SUV practicality with hybrid running costs.
Watch for: Rear visibility is limited by the design; rear space is tighter than a Qashqai.
Toyota RAV4 (2013–2022): best family SUV
Price range: €12,000–€28,000 | Motor tax: €180–€390/year
The RAV4 is the practical family choice, spacious, reliable, and available in petrol, diesel and Hybrid. The 2.0 and 2.5 Hybrid (from 2019) are the pick of the range; the 2.0 D-4D diesel suits high-mileage motorway drivers.
Best for: Families needing space, tow capacity (up to 1,650 kg on Hybrid), and all-weather confidence.
Watch for: Diesel DPF on short-trip use; Hybrid model commands a premium but is worth it for most buyers.
Toyota Auris (2013–2018): the underrated alternative
Price range: €7,000–€14,000 | Motor tax: €120–€280/year
The Auris was replaced by the newer Corolla in 2019 but remains an excellent buy. Essentially the same mechanicals as the Corolla of the same era, same engines, same hybrid system, but cheaper because the name changed. If you find a clean Auris Hybrid, buy it.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers who want Corolla reliability without the Corolla price.
Toyota Avensis (2012–2018): best motorway cruiser
Price range: €8,000–€16,000 | Motor tax: €280–€600/year
The Avensis is a spacious D-segment saloon and estate, ideal for long-distance drivers. The 2.0 D-4D diesel is the pick for motorway mileage. Less exciting than a Corolla but more comfortable on long runs and cheaper than an equivalent Passat or Mondeo.
Best for: Sales reps, long-distance commuters, families needing estate boot space.
Watch for: Higher motor tax on larger engines; diesel DPF on urban use.

What to check on any used Toyota
Toyotas are reliable, not immune to neglect. Before buying any used Toyota:
- Full service history: Toyota service stamps or receipts at correct intervals
- Hybrid battery check: on Hybrid models, no warning lights and a smooth transition between electric and petrol
- NCT status: long cert remaining saves money; check at ncts.ie
- History check: Cartell or Motorcheck for finance, write-offs and mileage, see our history check guide
- Timing belt: petrol engines with a belt (not chain) need replacement at the interval in the service book
